The title is derived from a wedding ode by Edmund Spenser and yet the work’s mood is sombre. Gerhard’s Epithalamion is a showpiece for large orchestra with a prominent role for a large percussion section. His use of rhythm and percussion instruments is magnificent. Gerhard employs the full orchestra together in rare moments rather focusing on the interwoven dialogue between instruments such as the strings and solo flute.
